Now that fall is officially upon us, the grocery stores aisles are stocked with everyone’s favorite autumn staple: pumpkin. Humans rave over pumpkin flavored treats, but did you know your pup is also a big fan of the iconic orange squash? In addition to the great taste, pumpkin also offers health benefits for your four-legged pal. Canned pureed pumpkin (be on the lookout for all natural canned pumpkin with no additives) is low in calories, high in fiber, and full of beneficial vitamins. It also makes a fabulous addition to recipes, just like these all-natural dog treats!
1 ½ cup grain-free flour (coconut or almond flour are great options)
½ cup natural nut butter (peanut is a puppy favorite)
½ cup coconut oil
1 heaping cup of pumpkin puree
3-5 organic eggs depending on the dryness of the dough
- Preheat oven to 350°F
- Mix ingredients thoroughly to form a cohesive dough
- Roll out dough into a roughly ¼ inch thick sheet and use this adorable bone cookie cutter or this festive pumpkin one to shape the treats
- Place on a lined cookie sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes until cooked through and crispy
- Cool completely and serve!
Your dog will love these crunchy treats so much he’ll be begging you for them all year long. Canned pumpkin is shelf stable for up to two years, so stock up now and keep the treats coming! While these treats make for a great special reward, if you’re thinking of using treats exclusively to train your dog, there might be a better method for fixing undesirable behaviors.
